AT BARUCH PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

New York, NY- January 2010.  Baruch Performing Arts Center (BPAC) has announced the 4th season of the 55 Underground Concert Series, playing February 12, 13 & 18, 2010, featuring folk rock vocalist Ari Hest, jazz & blues singer Pyeng Threadgill (opened by acoustic folk jazz singer Lola Johnson), and the progressive award-winning jazz rock & funk band The Breakfast.

Managing Director John Malatesta created the 55 Underground Concerts in the spring of 2008 and serves as lead producer for the series at Baruch Performing Arts Center, which is Baruch College’s professional performing arts center. “I wanted to create a series specifically for the students of the great colleges in New York City with young musicians, close to their age, who have created their own idiosyncratic stamp of music. Our young singer/songwriters are masters of capturing their own identities in their sound and lyrics. I wouldn’t be surprised if they become tomorrow’s major artists”, says Malatesta about the series.

The 55 Underground Concerts Series at Baruch includes the following concerts:

  1. Ari Hest: Fri, Feb 12, 2010 @ 8pm

Already signed to a major label, Ari Hest opted out of that deal for more control and embarked on his ambitious ‘52’ project, during which he spent all of last year immersed in an unprecedented effort – to write, record, produce and release one new song per week, for 52 weeks in a row, available through various online outlets. On March 10th, the fan-crazy-devoted artist will self-release his new studio CD ‘Twelve Mondays’, which features reworked versions of 12 fan-selected songs, culled from the past year’s extraordinary output. It’s a renegade path that reveals the ‘New Music Industry’ at its best, and allows Hest’s impressive work to find the natural audience. ‘Twelve Mondays’ showcases the diversity of Hest’s songwriting – from the haunting, mini-masterpiece ‘Broken Voices’ to the USA TODAY Listen Up Music Pick ‘The Weight,’ which was praised as a “poignant, acoustic reverie…” From the wistful travelogue “Ride The Brake” to the radio-friendly “Dead End Driving,” it’s a remarkable mix that’s distinguished by the intelligence, nuance and range of Hest’s material. Add to that the fact that these songs were written amid the week-to-week gauntlet of ‘52’, and it’s all the more impressive. Get your seats now! Tickets are selling very fast.

  1. Pyeng Threadgill: Sat, Feb 13, 2010 @ 9pm

As the daughter of composer, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist Henry Threadgill and choreographer/dancer Christina Jones, a founding member of the celebrated dance company the Urban Bush Women, indie/jazz & blues singer Pyeng Threadgill will sing selections from her three highly acclaimed albums “Sweet Home: Pyeng Threadgill Sings Robert Johnson”, “Of the Air”, and “Portholes to a Love & Other Short Stories”, joined by her band Tyler Wood (keys), Derek Nievergelt (bass), John Shannon (guitar), and Evan Pazner (drums). The press has noted her talents as a jazz and blues singer, but also as a folksinger and storyteller, most notably on her album which explores the music of Blues pioneer Robert Johnson. All Music Guide reflected, “She paints her blues shiny black and pushes them headlong into a future where tradition and history are processes of evolution…” However, her original compositions have caught the attention of the national media. The St. Louis Post commented, “As a vocalist, she’s charmingly eclectic. As a songwriter, she’s simply one of the most imaginative to emerge in the past decade…” and The San Francisco Guardian compared her to Abbey Lincoln. Her music explores concepts of reality, magic, humanity and nature through the use of metaphor, and has been heard regularly on radio, in front of audiences as varied as NYC venues Nublu and Joe's Pub, as well as The Montreal Jazz Festival, Detroit Institute of The Arts, The Sun Side Jazz Club in Paris, and even on the big screen. In 2006 Threadgill was asked to be a featured player in the documentary film starring Youssou N'Dour entitled "Retour A Goree" by director Pierre Yves-Borgeaud. “Portholes…” has already earned her a fellowship from The New York Foundation for The Arts in Music Composition. Using impressionistic guitars, hard set grooves, keyboards, and swaggering horns, it is clear Pyeng Threadgill is a compelling storyteller and bandleader.

  1. The Breakfast: Thu, Feb 18, 2010 @ 7:30pm

The Breakfast is a hard-hitting jazz rock experimental quartet whose music ranges from progressive rock to sonic landscapes. Since the group’s inception 11 years ago the band has played over 1,000 shows throughout the country and has released 7 albums. The Breakfast’s sound and energy are founded in the psychedelic, but their music features some incredibly well-crafted song structures and melodies. Original members Tim Palmieri (guitar) and Adrian Tromantano (drums) provide the distinguishing characteristics the band has thrived on from the beginning. The two have been described as “reaching near-telepathic communication on stage”, ripping through progressive shredding licks and jams without missing a beat. This is held together by the sonic glue of longtime, though newly re-added, keyboardist Jordan Giangreco, and supported from beneath by the jazz sensibilities of bassist Chris DeAngelis. In 2003/04 The Breakfast accepted their first Jammy award for Best Emerging Artist at The Madison Square Garden Theater. In its long career the band has performed with other music greats such as The Wailers, moe, Mike Gordon, Umphrey’s McGee, Disco Biscuits, Robby Krieger (The Doors), Garaj Mahal, Soulive, Lettuce, Tea Leaf Green and Particle. Their intense touring schedule has featured appearances at such notable music festivals as 10,000 Lakes Festival (twice), moe.down, Gathering of the Vibes, Camp Bisco, and High Sierra, among others.

Barbados Jazz Festival 2010… Simply Bodacious

By Dr. Anita Davis Defoe

Barbados, WI…Barbadian elegant hospitality and tropical splendor were center stage during the recent staging of the 2010 jazz festival.  While showcasing a variety of venues, each with its own distinctive flavor, music enthusiasts were treated to an assortment of musical delights from January 11th – 17th and CaribVoice Radio, a leader in edutainment was in the house.

The 2010 jazz fest marks seventeen years of this musical festival which is produced by Gilbert Rowe, the visionary who has championed the event over the years. When asked about the Barbados Jazz Festival and its innovative approach to providing festival goers with glimpses of settings across the island. Rowe stated, “The festival is an opportunity to display the beauty of the island and great music. The festival is a result of the work of my team. We work hard to produce a quality musical festival, and I am proud to say that from production to sound, these are all home grown technical teams; this is Barbados at its finest.”

Trumpeter Etienne Charles and saxophonist Joe Lovano filled the over three hundred year old Sunbury Plantation with smooth grooves kicking the festival off in grand style. The second night mesmerizing shows by Barbadians Shane Forester and songbird Toni Norville had the audiences wondering could the performances in the nights to come get any better; could the other performers match these two talents, as Barbados certainly proved that it is a wellspring of emerging international talents. The Heritage Park audience was begging for more when the dynamic singing diva Toni Norville finally exited the stage. Norville offered the audience a  couple of unexpected treats when Paula Hinds joined her onstage demonstrating that she has phenomenal pipes and a range that can rock the Caribbean sea from miles away; while Kirk Brown, of Strategy the Band, the official band of CaribVoice Radio roused the crowd fusing with Norville to close the set in an awesome fashion.

Motown great Smokey Robinson showcased his catalogue of songs at the Garfield Sobers Complex on night three. Fantasia had belted out tunes to a packed house at the Barbados Music Awards just days earlier, and Smokey did not disappoint as the audience traveled down memory lane with him as he sang “Quiet Storm, “Going to A Go Go,” “Oh Baby Baby,” “Tears of a Clown,” “Baby Don’t Cry,” “Cruising,” along with countless hits he penned for the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, and “Who’s Loving You” made popular by Michael Jackson.

Night four featured a dinner set at the Crane Beach Resort, the first resort hotel in the Caribbean. After cocktails in the resort’s Town Square, and dinner at one of the property’s restaurant, Elio Villafranka presented an evening of Cuban Classics that transported the audience, making everyone feel as though they were sitting in a cozy Havana supper club.

Lalah Hathaway serenaded, scatted, and filled Ilaro Court, on the grounds of the Barbados Prime Minister’s residence with her sultry alto voice.  If one were to close their eyes, at times it was as though Donnie Hathaway, her father, a notable R&B singer who penned the popular seasonal “This Christmas” was on stage along side Lalah. The voice, and her haunting  lyrical interpretations were uncanny.  Highlights of the evening were renditions of “Summertime,” ‘Street Life,” “Forever, For Always, For Love,” and a rousing jazzy groove of a host of Michael Jackson hits.

The rolling mounds of Farley Hill National Park served as the backdrop for the festival’s Saturday and Sunday performance. Bwakore, from Martinique jammed under the splendor of the Barbados sun, and their set was certainly a memorable one. Blending a vibrant mix of musical genres, Bwakore ignited the crowd with their unforgettable sound and will likely be gracing more festival stages this year. Tizer, featuring violinist Karen Briggs did not dissatisfy the audience either. While most had never heard of Tizer, when they finished serving up their musical entrée, their name was etched in the minds of everyone in the park. Not since Noel Pointer has a violinist enthralled an audience like Briggs did each time she did her solo thing. Headliner Robin Thicke, with young girls screaming with excitement sang songs from a newly released cd, and hits such “The Sweetest Love” and “Lost Without You.”

Barbadian Rock and Roller Alex M added a different sound, opening the Sunday affair with acoustic guitar and a mix of band influences to create his unique sound.  Bringing the audience to a rapid crescendo was saxophonist Barbadian Arturo Tarpin. Tarpin, who was spectacular at the recent Cayman Jazzfest displayed a range that soothes the most beastly soul. Joining him onstage for several numbers were Marisa Lindsay, another Barbadian with a powerful voice and Toni Norville, who was invited back to join in the onstage melodic frolic. Warren Hill’s performance was excellent, and the crowd was disappointed when the set was over.

The audience, especially women of all ages, could not contain their exhilaration when singer, song writer and producer Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds graced the stage. Opening with his signature hits, Bsbyface sang snippets of songs he has written for some of the biggest names in the business; “End of the Road,” sang by Boys-to-Men; “My, My, My” sang by Johnny Gill, and a host of other top charting hits. Throughout his performance, the audience sang along with gusto. And when a rain drizzle turned into a downpour, Babyface returned to the stage and did an encore number as the crowd swayed to the beat umbrellas in tow.

The Barbados Jazz Festival 2010 was seven days of unforgettable music, memorable musicians, and creative artistry..in a word, it was bodacious.

Passion presented at Barbados Music Awards 2010

The 5th installment of the Barbados Music Awards held at The Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium was a hot bed of Heritage and culture as we saw dynamic performances from the likes of Fantasia Barrino, Livy Franc, Jaicko, Ria Borman, BMA Ronnie Morris, Omar McClurken, Alison Hinds and several dancers, as they performed with grace, passion and perfection as a tribute performance to the Late Great Michael Jackson . Several artists who worked hard during two thousand and nine received awards and are to be commended for their dedication to the task of music as professionals.
This year’s event celebrated the King of Pop, The Late Great Michael Jackson and after watching the show I could understand the rationale. The honor was mine to see the emulation of young Barbadians honor the King of Pop in song and dance and showcased the impact Michael Jackson had on the youth of our Nation.  The young man who performed as part of the dance group really impacted Mr. Joseph Jackson, father of Michael Jackson who was on hand to receive two awards on behalf of his son.
Additionally, the performance and musical delivery by Alison Hinds will become Legendary in the Island of Barbados. Let it be known by all readers of this article that January 10, 2010 was the Day of Artistic Empowerment for Barbadians at home and abroad because they answered the question most Americans ask and I have had to answer for twenty five years living abroad. . Isn’t Barbados an Island of Calypso and soca? The answer for those who need to know is an absolute NO! The 5th Annual BMA’s showcase of multi talented success proved riveting and extremely world class for an event held in a tiny Island has now earned the right to be declared an International Event.
Ronnie Morris and Russell Ruck along with the Timeless Barbados staff are to be complimented on the International , professional and sophisticated manner in which the event took place over more than three exhilarating hours.
On behalf of the team at Caribvoiceradio and CAP Television we say EXCELSIOR.
